Deep endurance

Mental resilience and deep eloquence characterized Dr. Joe Macinnis’ motivational speech at the International Swimming Hall of Fame on Saturday, May 18. Having spent a lifetime analyzing leadership and teamwork in high-risk environments including the deep ocean, the battlefield, governments and corporations, Dr. Joe has led 10 research expeditions under the Arctic Ocean with the with the support of the Canadian government. As the first man to dive and explore the freezing waters beneath the North Pole, he was also among the first to dive the Titanic wreck site. In his role as medical advisor and journalist chronicling James Cameron’s seven mile science dive with National Geographic into the Mariana Trench, he described the personal submarine which kept the filmmaker safe at subzero pressure as being as compact as “a big green vertical torpedo that you actually wear.”
